Hello, I am Ujjwal, a Postdoctoral researcher at the Research Center for Sustainable Investments and Insurance (RCSII), a joint research center between the University of Amsterdam and ASR Nederland. My research focuses on designing AI systems that understand and analyze abstract, subjectively perceived themes in large-scale multimodal data. I received my PhD on analyzing abstract dimensions in online social multimedia from the University of Amsterdam, and at RCSII I apply these techniques to business problems in sustainable investments and insurance.

I have applied this work to challenges such as capturing abstract signals like "atmospherics" from user-contributed restaurant images and analyzing how companies communicate sustainability-related messages through high-level visual content.

My expertise includes building robust AI systems for large-scale social multimedia, covering the full pipeline from messy real-world data to reliable production systems. I am also the co-creator of Exquisitor, a production-scale visual search and exploration system that supports conversational queries and relevance feedback over millions of images and videos.
